So glad I happened upon your blog. I love art, but was never very knowledgeable. I feel like I’ve learned so much in just the short time reading over some of your posts. As for this, I love these pieces because they’re simple (and by that I don’t mean simplistic, I mean they are not too busy if that makes any sense). Plus, I love bright color so the combinations of colors used here totally draw me in. Do I understand it? I don’t if I understand what his intent was, but it brings out the child in me. They’re fun and bright and just make me feel happy.

Perhaps one day a revelation may change my mind, but for now, my gut fails to respond to his work. Marketing success may be impressive, but it adds nothing in the way of artistic merit (unless, of course, the marketing is itself the artistic statement, which renders the object to be of little intrinsic value.)

Great criticism Molecules of Emotion. The idea here is really expressing what each of us thinks. I doe believe he is a great marketer. I do also believe he is an unvonventional artist. What about he morbidity of his animal pieces?. He knows provoquing and expressing this catchy human emotion.

As an abstract artist myself, I have learned not to try interpreting, explaining or even understanding works of pure abstract art, for to do so prevents me from enjoying the true beauty of the art. Even titles, although I use them myself, become a henderance for appreciating abstract art. Damien Hirst´s abstract paintings are true works of art. I enjoy looking at each piece, and have no idea what they mean, if anything at all.

You have hit the nail on the head with this comment Glennie, it is all about self promotion, except he gets others to do it for him, because he couldn’t do it for himself. He is no more a marketeer than an artist.He is a “used commodity” by the established great and good of the art buyers world.

Hi Ribas Velazquez (Xavi), first of all thanks for joining the conversation. It is curios, because what happened to you the first time you saw a Damien Hirst piece is more or less what happened and still happens to me each time I see a Hirst. You talk about Duchamp ready mades and I guess it is more or less what Hirst does. In fact some say his is a master copier. Maybe he is. I don´t know but I believe he goes one (or various) steps forward. as you say it all depends on which lever you understand reality.

Hi Antonio.I remember the first time I saw a Damien Hirst piece of art was when I was looking at a collection of British artists in an exhibition in Carlisle. Next to a Turner and a masterpiece of Constable there was a piece by Hirst. It was half of a little cow in a glass box. It really caught my attention. I had the impression that something was out of place and I couldn’t understand what I was seeing. I guess that was the point. As Duchamp demonstrates with his ready-mades, shapes can be explained by the use they are made for, but they loose their significance when you change their environment and become something else, something different, ART or an-art. I guess that layers can give us an explanation about the shapes we know and it depends in which level you understand reality.

Hi Wessel, as I said I do not yet know if I like or nor Damien Hirst´s abstract paintings. The origens od the color spots seems interesting, but the as you mention there is a lot of own “plagiarization”.which as with the shark may detract the original artwork.

I appreciate his ‘animal’work. Not his abstract paintings. Not to mention the paintings he did a few years ago. Then it was clear; Hirst is a bad painter. But like I said I think his animal work is powerful. His weakness is that he makes too much work out of a serie. For example; The skark piece. 1 shark is strong image. But then he put another shark in a box, wich weakens the first piece with the shark. Hirst should be more careful not to ‘plagiarize’his own work.
